How American golfers flying private to Portugal can plan the arrival, the golf bags and the drives between Cascais, Lisbon and the Algarve courses with a private driver.
Why golfers from the USA keep choosing Portugal
Portugal has become one of the easiest golf trips in Europe for Americans. The flight from the East Coast is shorter than many people expect, the climate allows play for most of the year, and two strong golf areas sit within reach of one another: the coast west of Lisbon, around Cascais and Estoril, and the Algarve in the south. English is widely spoken at clubs and hotels, and the pace off the course is relaxed.
For groups flying private, the appeal is even stronger. You choose your departure time, travel with your clubs on board and land close to the courses. What makes the difference after landing is the ground plan: who meets you, how the golf bags travel and how you move between hotel, course and dinner without thinking about it.
Choosing the arrival airport
Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport accepts all aircraft sizes and is the usual arrival point for long-range jets crossing the Atlantic. Cascais Tires Aerodrome, a few minutes from Cascais and Estoril, suits smaller and midsize aircraft and is very convenient for golfers staying on the coast. Faro Airport is the gateway to the Algarve courses around Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago.
Your aviation provider confirms which airport works for your aircraft, its weight and the season. Some groups land in Lisbon, play the coast first and then travel south by road, which is around two and a half to three hours to the central Algarve depending on traffic and stops.
Golf bags and the right vehicle
Golf bags take more space than suitcases, and this is where many ground plans go wrong. A sedan that fits two guests rarely fits two travel cases and two golf bags. We plan the vehicle around the bag count rather than the guest count, so please share how many golf bags, suitcases and smaller bags you are bringing.
As a guide, couples with clubs travel comfortably in a Mercedes-Benz V-Class, and groups of four to eight golfers usually travel in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. For larger groups or long stays we can add a second vehicle for luggage, so nobody travels with a bag on their lap.
A typical week on the ground
A relaxed plan often starts with a quiet arrival day in Cascais after the overnight flight. The next days alternate rounds on the coast with time off, such as a private day in Sintra or an afternoon in Lisbon. The driver waits at the club after each round, loads the bags and returns you to the hotel.
The second half of the week can move to the Algarve, where several well-known courses sit close together. Transfer days are kept simple, with a lunch stop on the way, and in the Algarve the driver takes care of the short daily runs between hotel, courses and restaurants.
Tee times, clubs and what we handle
Portugal Magik is a private driver and tour company. We do not sell flights or book tee times, and we do not charter aircraft. Your aviation provider handles the flight and your golf club or concierge confirms tee times. We plan the ground side around those times, so please share the confirmed schedule once you have it.
If a round finishes late or the weather changes the plan, the driver adapts. Because you keep the same company for the whole stay, there is one point of contact for all transfers, rather than a different taxi for each journey.
Before you fly
A few details help us prepare: aircraft type and tail number, arrival airport and estimated time, the handling agent if known, the number of guests, golf bags and suitcases, and your hotel or villa addresses. A mobile number with country code for the lead guest lets the driver reach you on landing.
With those details in hand, we prepare a simple day by day plan of transfers and touring for your week. Golf is the focus, and the rest of the trip falls into place around it.
Beyond the fairways
Non golfing partners often join these trips, and Portugal makes it easy for everyone to enjoy the week. While the group plays, a second driver can take partners to Sintra, along the coast to Cabo da Roca or into Lisbon for a relaxed afternoon in the historic center. Everyone meets again in the evening for dinner, without anyone needing to drive.
Food and wine are a big part of a golf week here. Grilled fish on the coast, a long lunch in the Algarve hills or a single winery visit on a rest day all fit naturally between rounds, and the driver keeps the timing realistic.
