Itinerary

On this Historical Lisbon Downtown Private Walking Tour (3h), we will provide you the best introduction tour of the city. This tour is recommended for the first day in the city, and you will provide you with the best highlights of Lisbon downtown area. Although the itinerary can be adjusted during the tour, this is the standard/regular itinerary:

• Meeting Point at Rossio Square in Lisbon (10AM or 2PM).
• visit Rossio Square, and learn the history behind the most important square of Lisbon.
• Learn about the Estaus Palace, former Inquisition Headquarters, today’s the National Theatre.
• Stop at the Jewish Memorial, and learn about the Lisbon Pogrom of 1506.
• Learn the history of the Sao Domingos Church, and it’s connection with the Pogrom of 1506.
• Pass by Praça da Figueira, former central market square of Lisbon.
• Walk along Rua Augusta, the most central avenue of Lisbon Dowtown.
• Stop for photos in front of Santa Justa elevator / funicular.
• Sample a local custart tart (optional).
• Learn the history behind the big earthquake of 1755, that devastated Lisbon with a massive 9.1 magnitude.
• Stop at Praça do Comercio, former Royal Square, at Tagus (Tejo) riverfront.
• Admire the beautiful views overlooking the Tejo River, and Cais das Colunas.
• Stop in front of Igreja da Conceição ^Velha, and see it’s amazing 500 year-old Manueline façade.
• Head to Alfama, stopping in front of Casa dos Bicos (today’s the PT Nobel Prize of Literature museum).
• Admire Chafariz del Rey, historical building with it’s old medieval fountain
• Continue the tour to Alfama, the old quarter of Lisbon, and it’s narrow streets.
• Stop at the old Jewish Quarter of Alfama, and learn the history behind the Jewish Communities of Lisbon.
• Head to the Lisbon Cathedral (1000 years old). Learn the history of the Cathedral (visit inside not included).
• Explore the old ruins of the Roman Colosseum / Amphitheatre (2000 years old), next to the Lisbon Cathedral.
• Pass by Saint Anthony’s Church (Saint of the Lost Things), and the house where he was born. Optional visit inside.
• Head down back to Rossio Square, passing by Rua da Prata / Lisbon Downtown / Baixa
• End the tour.

During the day we will pass by different attractions and stop for pictures. Major visits inside attractions are not included on this tour, instead we will make shorter visits inside to maximize your time and see the most sights possible.
