Driving to Pena Palace in a Rental Car? Think Again.

Here’s why you’ll likely be turned away — and what to do instead.

Planning a trip to Sintra and thinking of driving up to Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle in your rental car?

Don’t.
Even if your rental car has Portuguese plates. Even if you’re already in Sintra. Even if your GPS tells you it’s possible.

Due to local regulations by the Sintra Town Hall, the roads leading to Pena Park, Pena Palace, and the Moorish Castle are off-limits to rental cars, private vehicles, and foreign-plated cars — including:

  • Cars rented in Portugal

  • Vehicles with Spanish or other EU plates

  • Personal cars, even with Portuguese plates

What Happens If You Try to Drive Up?

You’ll encounter:

  • Traffic barriers and police checkpoints, where you’ll be stopped and turned away

  • Confusing one-way streets and blocked access to the forest road

  • No place to turn around, especially during busy hours

  • A likely 1.5 to 2-hour uphill walk if you park below (in São Pedro or Sintra town)

And once you’ve reached the top on foot, you might already be late for your palace entry time — if you make it at all.

So Who Can Drive to the Palaces?

Only:

  • Locals with Sintra Town Hall-issued permits
