What every visitor needs to know before heading to Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, and Quinta da Regaleira.
Sintra is one of Portugal’s most extraordinary destinations — but it’s also one of the most challenging places to visit by car.
Below are the most frequently asked questions we receive from travelers planning their visit. If you’ve rented a car or are thinking of visiting Sintra on your own, this guide is essential reading.
Can I drive to Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle in my rental car?
No.
The roads leading to Pena Palace, Pena Park, and the Moorish Castle are located within a protected conservation zone.
Only the following are allowed access:
-
Licensed private tour operators (such as Portugal Magik)
-
Locals with permits from the Sintra Town Hall
-
Municipal transport, emergency, and service vehicles
Rental cars, even those rented in Portugal with Portuguese plates, as well as Spanish or foreign-plated vehicles, are prohibited and will be diverted downhill at checkpoints.
Is there any parking near Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle?
No public parking is available near the palace entrances. The few spaces that exist (about 20–30 total) are reserved for authorized vehicles only.
Everyone else is forced to park far below in the village — from where the walk can take up to 1.5 to 2 hours uphill.
Can I park in Sintra and walk to the top?
Technically yes, but it’s not advisable. The walk from the historical center or São Pedro to Pena or the Moorish Castle is:
-
Steep, winding, and mostly without shade
-
Shared with shuttle buses and tuk-tuks
-
1.5 to 2 hours long, one way
-
Easy to underestimate — especially in warm weather or with limited time
Many travelers arrive exhausted or miss their timed tickets entirely.
What about Quinta da Regaleira? Can I drive there and park?
No dedicated parking is available at Regaleira.
The palace sits on a narrow, one-way road with no stopping or legal parking.
Nearby public parking in Sintra fills early and often doesn’t exist at all during weekends or high season.
Even if you park in the village, expect a 15–20 minute walk, often uphill.
Do these monuments require timed tickets?
Yes.
All three — Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, and Quinta da Regaleira — now operate with strict timed-entry tickets.
If you arrive late, you may be denied entry, even if you already paid for your ticket.
Will my GPS help me navigate around the restrictions?
No.
GPS and apps like Google Maps or Waze often lead drivers into:
-
Closed or restricted roads
-
Illegal shortcuts and dead ends
-
Heavily congested one-way streets
Local traffic enforcement is active, and fines may apply if you enter restricted areas.
