Traveling from Lisbon to Porto is much more than just moving between two cities — it’s a chance to discover the very soul of Portugal. This route takes you through medieval towns, UNESCO World Heritage monuments, dramatic Atlantic coastline, sacred pilgrimage sites, and charming riverside cities.
Over five days, you can immerse yourself in Portugal’s history, culture, and landscapes at a relaxed pace, staying overnight in picturesque towns that offer authentic charm. With Portugal Magik Private Tours, every detail is tailored for you — from the timing of each visit to your choice of boutique or luxury hotels.
Here’s how to make the most of five days from Lisbon to Porto, with unforgettable stops along the way.
Day 1 — Lisbon → Óbidos & Nazaré
Leave Lisbon behind and head north to the enchanting walled town of Óbidos, one of Portugal’s most photogenic medieval villages. Its cobbled streets are lined with whitewashed houses, colorful flowers, and artisan shops. Stroll along the castle walls for sweeping views of the countryside and taste the local ginjinha cherry liqueur, traditionally served in a chocolate cup.
In the afternoon, continue to Nazaré, a fishing village turned surfing capital, famous for its towering Atlantic waves. Visit the Sítio viewpoint for panoramic ocean vistas and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré. Return to Óbidos in the evening for your first overnight stay inside (or near) its historic walls.
Overnight: Óbidos
Day 2 — Batalha, Alcobaça & Fátima
Today is dedicated to three of Portugal’s most important cultural and spiritual sites. Begin at Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO-listed masterpiece of Gothic and Manueline architecture, built to commemorate the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota.
Next, visit Alcobaça Monastery, another UNESCO treasure and home to the moving tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro — Portugal’s most tragic royal love story.
In the afternoon, continue to Fátima, one of the world’s most famous Catholic pilgrimage sites. Visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, and the Chapel of the Apparitions. If time allows, attend Mass or light a candle for a personal prayer. Return to Óbidos for a second night.
Overnight: Óbidos
Day 3 — Almourol Castle & Tomar
Travel east toward the Tagus River to visit the storybook Almourol Castle, perched dramatically on a small island. This 12th-century Templar stronghold looks like it was lifted straight from a medieval legend.
Continue to Tomar, the city of the Knights Templar and home to the extraordinary Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its famed round church (Charola), intricate Manueline window, and centuries of layered history. Stay overnight in Tomar to enjoy its peaceful evening atmosphere.
Overnight: Tomar
Day 4 — Tomar → Coimbra
After breakfast, depart Tomar for Coimbra, Portugal’s historic university city. Coimbra was once the capital of Portugal, and its University of Coimbra is one of the oldest in Europe. Visit the stunning Baroque Joanina Library, the Royal Palace, and the old cathedral, then wander the charming narrow streets of the historic center.
The evening is yours to enjoy a riverside dinner and perhaps hear the haunting sounds of fado music, performed in the unique Coimbra style.
Overnight: Coimbra
Day 5 — Coimbra → Aveiro → Porto
Leave Coimbra and head to Aveiro, the “Venice of Portugal,” famous for its colorful canals and traditional moliceiro boats. Explore its Art Nouveau buildings, taste the local ovos moles pastry, and enjoy the peaceful waterfront atmosphere.
Arrive in Porto in the afternoon, where you can enjoy a brief introduction to the city before concluding your five-day journey.
