    Why You Can’t Drive Your Rental Car to Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle

    Even if it’s rented in Portugal — or has Portuguese plates

    Every week, we speak with travelers who tell us the same thing:
    “We were going to book a tour to Sintra… but we rented a car instead. It seemed easier and more affordable.”
    Until, of course, they arrive at Sintra — and realize that driving a rental car to visit Pena Palace, Pena Park, or the Moorish Castle is no longer possible.

    It’s not a suggestion. It’s the law. And it surprises hundreds of visitors every day.

    What most travelers don’t know: rental cars are forbidden in Sintra’s upper palace zone

    The most iconic sites in Sintra — Pena National Palace, Pena Park, and the Moorish Castle — are all located at the top of the Sintra mountain, surrounded by forest within a protected UNESCO landscape.

    To preserve this area, the Sintra Town Hall has enforced strict traffic restrictions, which apply to:

    • Rental cars (yes, even if rented legally in Portugal)

    • Private vehicles with Portuguese plates

    • Spanish-plated cars

    • Foreign vehicles of any kind

    If you’re not a local resident or driving a specially licensed tour vehicle, you will be stopped by police or traffic enforcement and diverted downhill, often long before you reach the palace gates.

    What about parking near Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle?

    Another common misconception is that travelers can park “nearby” and walk the rest of the way. Unfortunately, this isn’t accurate either.

    Here’s why:

    • There are only about 20–30 parking spaces total near the entrance to Pena and the Moorish Castle.

    • These spots are reserved exclusively for authorized vehicles — including licensed tour operators like Portugal Magik.

    • During peak hours, the area is completely closed to non-permitted cars.

    • Most visitors are redirected to public parking far below, often near Sintra’s historical center — requiring an uphill walk of 1h30 to 2h.

    And this walk? It’s steep, winding, and often crowded — not ideal when you’ve booked timed palace entry or are visiting with children, elderly guests, or in hot weather.

    Why GPS is misleading — and won’t help

    Even if your GPS or rental car navigation directs you “uphill” toward the monuments, it won’t show current police barriers or temporary roadblocks, which are placed dynamically depending on traffic.

    In many cases, visitors are sent down one-way roads, only to be forced to circle back and start all over again — wasting valuable time and risking missed tickets or fines.

    So who is allowed to drive to the top?

    Access is strictly limited to:

    • Registered local residents of Sintra (with valid town permits)

    • Licensed private tour companies, such as Portugal Magik

    • Official municipal transport and shuttle vehicles

    • Emergency and service vehicles
