Discover Lisbon’s Jewish Quarter in Alfama and the Jewish Memorial of 1506
Lisbon is a city of many layers—ancient, multicultural, and filled with stories waiting to be uncovered. Among its most meaningful, yet often overlooked, narratives is the legacy of the Jewish community in Lisbon, particularly in the Alfama district, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city.
As you stroll through its cobbled streets, you’ll not only witness centuries-old architecture and local life—you’ll also be walking through the historical heart of Lisbon’s former Jewish Quarter, where generations of Sephardic Jews once lived, worshipped, and thrived.
🕍 The Jewish Quarter of Alfama – A Hidden Chapter of Lisbon
Before the forced conversions and eventual expulsion of Jews from Portugal in the late 15th century, the Jewish community was an essential part of Lisbon’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. The Alfama district was home to one of the city’s main Jewish quarters, known as a “Judiaria.”
Though few physical remnants remain today, the spirit of this once-vibrant community lives on in the narrow alleyways, old houses, and hidden courtyards of Alfama. This area offers a chance to reflect on centuries of coexistence, intellectual flourishing, and, tragically, persecution.
On a guided visit, you can trace the outline of the old Jewish district, learn about daily life in medieval Lisbon, and understand the pivotal role the Jewish people played in Portuguese history—particularly in the fields of science, medicine, navigation, and trade.
🕯️ The Jewish Memorial – Remembering the 1506 Massacre
Just a short walk from Alfama, in the São Domingos Square near Rossio, stands a powerful monument that honors the memory of the victims of one of Lisbon’s darkest moments: the 1506 Massacre.
In April 1506, amid fear, fanaticism, and religious intolerance, thousands of “New Christians” (Jews who had been forcibly converted to Christianity) were brutally murdered during a horrific uprising sparked by a false miracle. The Jewish Memorial was unveiled in 2008 as a reminder of this tragedy and a call for remembrance and tolerance.
The inscription on the stone reads:
“In memory of the thousands of Jews victims of intolerance and religious fanaticism, murdered in the massacre of 1506.”
This site serves as both a solemn space for reflection and an educational landmark that invites visitors to consider the enduring importance of coexistence and respect for all faiths.
